Meaning of the Genitive case
This case has rather many meanings ,the leading of which is
possession on the broad sense of the word.In this meaning the genitive
case is termed the possessive genitive :John’s book,the child’s toys.
Another important meaning of the genitive case is called
subjective.In this meaning the noun denotes the doer ,its subject.This
genitive is termed the subjective genitive:the brother’s arrival/the
brother arrived/ , John’s action/John acted/.
Opposite to the subjective the objective
meaning is.In this meaning
the genitive is called the objective genitive ,for the noun here denotes
the object of the action done by the subject: Munk’s murderer/ smb
murdered Munk/
Other kinds of the genitive are ,depending on the meaning of its
forms ,descriptive /qualitative/ : Not these terrible pirate’s hands
of yours….
TheGenitive of measure :
a two mile’s walk , a minute’s silence; the
genitive of personal and public relations :John’s friend , John’s
chief.
